Where to Stand for the Prague Orloj in November 2026

The apostle procession is free, runs on the hour and is over inside a minute. What November 2026 changes is which towers, windows and terraces around it are open.

Where to Stand for the Prague Orloj in November 2026
Prague, República Checa

The apostle procession at the Prague Astronomical Clock (Old Town Square) runs on the hour from 09:00 to 23:00 and is over in well under a minute. From the square it costs nothing, because there is no ticket for that side of the tower. Eight figures in the lower row were restored between May and October 2026, with only brief planned stoppages, and the clock is running normally again.

What happens on the hour

The dial sits on the pale stone south wall of a Gothic tower, blue and gold, a gilded sun-hand crossing the astrolabe above a lower circular calendar disc. Two small shuttered windows sit above it, and the apostles pass behind those. A golden cockerel sits under the arch, and a skeleton figure to the right rings a bell.

Stand facing the south wall a minute or two before the hour. The square side holds a crowd of any size, and nobody checks a ticket to stand in it. Because the procession runs until 23:00, you can also take it after dark.

Inside the Old Town Hall

The ticket is for the building rather than the show. Interiors with the tower cost 350 Kč, covering the tower gallery, the Knight's Hall and the underground. The lift on its own is 100 Kč. Guided circuit A adds 150 Kč a head and circuit B adds 100 Kč.

The lift and the halls take organised groups in timed batches, so a large party gets split across those slots. Decide before you queue whether you want the climb or only the minute on the hour, because the two are separate transactions.

Watching from a window or a terrace

Terasa U Prince (Old Town Square) is the one place that gets you above the crowd rather than into it. The fifth-floor terrace looks straight across at the clock tower and the Týn spires, with glass screens, patio heaters, wicker chairs and a transparent bubble-shaped viewing pod at the parapet. It opens daily 09:00 to 23:30, and parts of it are covered and heated. Reserve, since the square-facing seats go first. Non-diners can enter the terrace and the pod on a paid entry that includes a glass of champagne. Mains and cocktails run Kč Kč Kč Kč.

Café Mozart (Grand Hotel Praha, immediately opposite the Town Hall) gives the most direct eye-level view of the dial. Tall arched windows fill with the astrolabe from across the lane, above marble-topped tables, dark wood and cabinets of blue-and-white Meissen porcelain. There are only a handful of window tables and they go first-come, so arrive early. Live music plays on Thursday and Saturday evenings, and coffee and cake are Kč Kč Kč.

Churches and halls on the square

Church of Our Lady before Týn (Kostel Matky Boží před Týnem), Prague
Church of Our Lady before Týn (Kostel Matky Boží před Týnem), Prague

Church of Our Lady before Týn (Old Town Square, entrance through the arcade passage) is the pair of unequal black Gothic spires you photograph from the clock side, bristling with small turrets behind a row of pastel gabled houses. Inside, a dim blackened nave, gilded Baroque altars and Tycho Brahe's red marble tomb slab set into a pillar. Entry is free with a requested donation of 50 Kč, and the church asks for quiet. Mass, weddings and baptisms close it to sightseers, which is why morning visits often fail. Afternoons from 15:00, Tuesday to Saturday, are the reliable window. It shuts all day Monday year-round, and from December to February it also closes on Sunday afternoons.

St Nicholas Church (Old Town Square, north-west corner) has a white Baroque facade, twin towers and a green copper dome. The interior is bright white stucco under a huge glass crystal chandelier shaped like a crown, with an organ gallery above. Side-door entry is free, the church opens 10:00 to 17:00, and it stands two minutes from the clock. Hour-long concerts run daily at 18:00. Tickets sell at the main door from 14:00 at 600 Kč adult and 400 Kč student or senior; children pay 250 Kč. A block of seats has to be arranged in advance. This is the Old Town St Nicholas, not the bigger one across the river in Malá Strana.

Stone Bell House (Old Town Square) is a narrow bare stone Gothic tower-house wedged between ornate Baroque neighbours, with a carved stone bell set into the corner at first-floor height. The gallery hangs modern art in whitewashed vaulted halls of exposed medieval masonry, and the stripped-back shell is what you are really paying for. Entry is 200 Kč, or 90 Kč reduced; a family ticket is 450 Kč. It opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 20:00 and closes Monday. The door is 30 seconds from the clock.

Karlova and the bridge tower

Klementinum (Karlova) runs guided tours only, 50 minutes each, five minutes from the clock. The Baroque library hall has a frescoed ceiling, dark bookcases of white-vellum spines and huge antique globes standing on the floor. You see it from the threshold and cannot walk the aisles, which disappoints people who arrive expecting to. The route then takes a tight spiral stair to an open gallery atop a square tower crowned by a statue of Atlas holding a globe, and it is the best-value tower panorama in the Old Town. The adult tour is 380 Kč, with reduced youth, senior, child and family rates. Slots are released a week or two ahead and go quickly, so book early.

Old Town Bridge Tower (the Old Town end of Charles Bridge) is dark sandstone, heavily carved with seated royal figures and coats of arms. The top gallery looks straight down the full length of the statue-lined bridge toward the castle. November hours are 10:00 to 18:00, which puts sunset inside them. Entry is 250 Kč adult and 170 Kč reduced, and a family ticket is 500 Kč. The stairway is narrow and single-file, with no lift and no barrier-free route. Climb this one when the Town Hall tower queue is long.

Grand Café Orient (House of the Black Madonna), Prague
Grand Café Orient (House of the Black Madonna), Prague

Grand Café Orient (Celetná, in the House of the Black Madonna) is the only surviving Cubist café interior in the world, three minutes from the clock. The first floor is angular green-painted woodwork, faceted brass chandeliers and zig-zag railings, with a balcony over the street. Order the square věneček pastry with the coffee, Kč Kč. The 1912 department-store block carries a gilded Black Madonna on its corner and the Museum of Czech Cubism on the floors above. The room is compact and the staircase narrow. It opens 09:00 to 22:00 on weekdays and 10:00 to 22:00 at weekends.

Powder Gate Tower (standing free at the end of Celetná) is the quietest of the three towers near the clock. The blackened late-Gothic stonework is dense with pinnacles and statue niches, and a steep internal stone spiral staircase leads to an open balcony gallery. There is no lift. October and November hours are 10:00 to 18:00, extending to 19:30 in December. Entry is 200 Kč adult and 130 Kč reduced, with a 400 Kč family ticket.

Municipal House (next door to the Powder Gate) is where to put a wet November afternoon. The curved Art Nouveau facade has a mosaic semicircle above the entrance under a wrought-iron canopy, and the hour-long guided tour in English takes in Smetana Hall's glass dome and organ. Tours run daily to a fixed schedule, the box office and tour route work 10:00 to 19:00, and the café opens 08:00 to 21:00. The café is brass fittings, mirrors and marble under tall windows, and it seats large numbers. The tour is Kč Kč, coffee and cake Kč Kč.

Eating near the square, and the market

Restaurace Mincovna (Old Town Square) occupies the old royal mint, a big split-level room with brick vaulted ceilings, tall windows onto the square, dark timber tables and an open kitchen pass. Czech mains are Kč Kč, which is fair for this address, and locals eat here. It opens daily from 11:30, 12:00 at weekends, and serves to 23:00. At peak, reserve by phone or email rather than walking in.

Lokál Dlouhááá sits 10 minutes from the clock and serves tank Pilsner Urquell and homestyle Czech plates at Kč Kč. The hall is a very long white-tiled vault with a single row of plain wooden tables and benches running nearly 70 metres, steel beer tanks behind the bar, and waiters carrying trays of half-litre glasses with thick foam heads. It takes up to 1,300 guests a day, and parties of more than 12 must email [email protected] instead of booking online. Hours are Monday to Saturday 11:00 to 24:00 and Sunday 11:00 to 22:00. Weekend evenings fill.

Havelské tržiště still trades on its original medieval site, five minutes from the clock toward Wenceslas Square. A double row of red-and-white striped canvas awnings runs down a narrow arcaded street, stacked with apples, wooden toys, marionettes and painted eggs between pastel baroque houses. It opens Monday to Saturday 07:00 to 19:00 and Sunday 08:00 to 18:30. Mornings are much calmer, and the aisles narrow at midday. Carry cash.

The November calendar

The Old Town Square Christmas Market opens on 28 November 2026 with the tree lighting and runs to 6 January 2027, 10:00 to 22:00 daily. Wooden chalet stalls with pitched shingled roofs and strings of warm lights fill the square beneath a 25-metre spruce, with the lit clock tower rising directly behind them and smoke coming off the grills. Entry is free, and mulled wine, grilled sausage and trdelník are Kč Kč. Come before the 28th and you get an ordinary square. Evenings are extremely dense, so agree a meeting point before you arrive.

Museum of Prague holds Langweil's paper-and-card model of the 1820s and 1830s, 20 square metres of hand-cut miniature rooftops, courtyards and spires at 1:480, now split across 12 glass cases in a renovated neo-Renaissance hall. It shows the exact streets around the clock as they stood two centuries ago. The museum reopened in December 2025 after a long reconstruction, and main exhibitions are free through 2026. It opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00, Thursday to 20:00, and closes Monday. A short metro ride from the square gets you there.

Best time to go in November 2026

Start with the climb. The Old Town Hall, the Old Town Bridge Tower and the Powder Gate each take 50% off in the first hour after opening, which makes an early tower the cheapest hour of your day. Hold the bridge tower for late afternoon if you want the light on the river instead.

Give the afternoon to the square's interiors. The Týn church is dependable from mid-afternoon, Tuesday to Saturday, and the Stone Bell House stays open into the evening when the rest of the square has shut. Monday is the weakest day for anything indoors here, so plan Tuesday to Saturday where you have the choice.

A guided Old Town walk that takes in the clock runs every day of the week and is discounted at the moment. Book a November date ahead.

Is the inside ticket worth it

The procession needs nothing from you but a place to stand on the hour and a minute of attention, so the clock itself is free to anyone who turns up. The interior ticket suits a visitor who wants the tower gallery, the Knight's Hall and the underground. A party that mainly wants the dial at close range should put the money into a window table or the terrace.

Practical

Monday closes the Týn church, the Stone Bell House and the city museum, and the Týn church also goes dark during services on any day. Klementinum slots, a square-facing seat above the square and a table for more than 12 at Lokál Dlouhááá all need arranging in advance. See the Prague guide and the Prague hotel search.

Is the Prague Astronomical Clock working in November 2026?

Yes. The 2026 restoration of eight lower-row figures ran from May to October with only brief planned stoppages, and the clock is running normally again. The apostle procession goes on the hour from 09:00 to 23:00.

How long does the hourly show last?

Well under a minute. Two small shuttered windows open and the apostles pass behind them, with a golden cockerel under the arch and a skeleton figure to the right ringing a bell. Stand facing the tower's south wall a minute or two before the hour.

What does it cost to go inside the Old Town Hall?

Interiors with the tower are 350 Kč, which includes the tower gallery, the Knight's Hall and the underground. The lift on its own is 100 Kč. Guided circuit A adds 150 Kč a head, circuit B 100 Kč. The first hour after opening is 50% off.

Can I watch the clock from somewhere other than the crowd?

Terasa U Prince faces the clock tower from a fifth-floor terrace, open daily 09:00 to 23:30, partly covered and heated. Book ahead, because the square-facing seats go first, and non-diners pay an entry that includes a glass of champagne. Café Mozart, opposite the Town Hall, has a few first-come window tables at eye level with the dial.

Will the Christmas market be on when I visit in November 2026?

Only from 28 November 2026, when the tree lighting opens it. It then runs to 6 January 2027, 10:00 to 22:00 daily, with free entry. Before the 28th the square has no stalls.
